Have you ever read “bias-cut satin” in one of our product descriptions, or someone else’s, and wondered what it meant? The need-to-know answer is that “bias-cut” is a mark of quality, but if you want the full explanation, today we’re going to explore the reasons why: what exactly it is, and how it improves the look, fit and feel of a garment.

What is a “Bias Cut”?

When it comes to crafting high-quality sleepwear, a nice fabric is only half the equation. Equally important is how you use that fabric.

A fabric’s ‘grain’ is the direction in which the individual threads run. Bias-cut fabric is cut diagonally across the grain. The downsides are that you can cut out fewer pieces per rectangular roll of fabric, and it requires significantly more skill and patience to sew bias-cut fabric well, which is why this technique is usually only employed by luxury brands who charge a premium for it. However, the results are oh-so worth it which is why you’ll find many bias-cut sleepwear pieces at Shadowline Lingerie.

How the Bias Cut Improves Fit and Comfort

Two of the three key benefits of bias-cut fabric are an improved fit and superior comfort. That’s because when you cut fabric in this way, it has a little ‘give’ to it even if it’s a non-stretch fabric. The finished garment will mold to your body and move with it.

Anywhere that it’s closely-fitted, it will stretch just enough that you don’t get the taut pull lines you might with a same-sized garment that isn’t cut on the bias. Naturally, this added flexibility also makes it more comfortable to wear.

Why It Makes Satin Look Even More Luxurious

Glossy satin sleepwear always brings a sense of glamour to your bedtime routine, but opting for bias-cut satin sleepwear really elevates the luxury. It has a fluid fit that skims elegantly over your curves where it’s fitted closely to the body, and drapes beautifully in areas where it’s more flowy. It doesn’t hang straight down and look flat like a non-bias-cut satin, nor does it cling like a true stretch fabric – it simply flows.

How to Care for Bias-Cut Sleepwear

We recommend storing bias-cut sleepwear neatly folded in a drawer rather than hanging in your closet. Don’t hang it to dry after washing either – tumble dry or lay it flat. Finally, take care when ironing to avoid pulling the fabric; it is better to gently press creases out where possible.

All of this will prevent bias-cut garments from becoming misshapen, so that your gorgeous new luxury sleepwear stays looking – and fitting – perfect long term.
