What’s the Point of Pant Liner Slips?

Pant Liner

When it comes to skirt and dress slips, there are many different reasons that people wear them. But whereas skirts and dresses sometimes come with their own built-in lining layer that serves many of the same purposes, the same can’t really be said for pants. Even high-end pants are rarely lined inside, so you might be wondering, what’s the benefit of adding a pant slip?

But just like half and full slips, there are numerous reasons to wear a pant liner (or alternatively, a looser-fit culotte slip also known as ‘pettipants’, if the pants are wide leg ones.)

Opacity

Want to look your best in white or other light-colored pants this summer? Wearing nude underwear helps but even then, in thinner fabrics, your underwear can sometimes be visible. This is even more likely to be the case with pants than in skirts or dresses, since they’re more form-fitting. But add a pant liner such as our Shadowline® Pant Liner, made from extra-opaque Opacitrique® nylon, and you’ll have nothing to worry about!

Smoother look

Even if your pants are dark enough to hide your underwear’s color, you might still get a visible panty line bump. A pant slip not only helps to smooth this over, but they’ll also add fullness to the entire length of your pant leg which can lessen wrinkling and static cling for an overall smoother, more elegant look. This difference is particularly noticeable in the flowy, lighter-weight fabrics we tend to pick for summer.

Comfort

What about in the colder months, when we naturally gravitate towards heavier fabrics such as wool and denim? That’s when you’ll appreciate the other key benefit of a pant slip’s smoothness: it’s comfort factor. Both of our narrow-fit pant liners are made from 100% silky-smooth nylon, and trust us, it feels so much better against your skin than a stiff denim or scratchy wool does. It’ll smooth over any annoying bulky seams, too.

Warmth

And of course, an added layer means added insulation too. While our nylon and cotton batiste pant liners are lightweight and breathable enough that you can wear them in summer, they’ll also help to trap warm air against your body when the temperatures drop. The best of both worlds!

Cleaner clothing

Last but not least, just like a half or full slip does under a dress, a pant slip provides a barrier layer between your body and your outer clothing, keeping the clothing free from sweat and body oils so that it stays cleaner for longer. Perfect for delicate or dry-clean-only pants, for getting multiple wears out of one garment while on vacation, or just for extending the lifespan of your favorite pants by reducing the wear and tear that comes with each wash cycle.
